On selected dates, Rochester Youth Hockey Association will be  hosting a “Try Hockey Free Day” for children ages 4-9 who are new to hockey.  This is a great opportunity for children to try hockey and learn about the RYHA program.  Equipment will be provided.  Members of the Mite and RYHA program will be there to assist in getting your child on the ice and answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for showing interest in the Rochester Try Hockey for free program!  For some of you this a start of a great hockey career for your little superstar.

What should you expect?

Most kids that begin to skate can barely stand up and it's common to barely make it across the rink. Have no fear and don't pull the fire alarm! Almost every little hockey player started on the ice doing snow angels. In fact making snow angels may be their favorite part of the day. Some little hockey players may cry and are ready to get off the ice right away. Once again don't pull the fire alarm! Think of it this way you are asking a child with a steel blade attached to a boot to skate up down an ice rink while trying to score goals with their family name on the back of their jersey.

Hockey takes some time to learn and it can take 5-6 times on the ice to get comfortable about going for end to end. Please encourage your child on their adventure on the rink!

Please be patient with the Try Hockey volunteers as this has been a popular event.

What do you need?

  • We ask that you have your child come in socks, sweat pants and a sweat shirt.
  • We do have gear available for those who want to wear it. You can also bring  your child's bike helmet to wear on the ice in case we have a large number of children show up.  We do have a good share of hockey helmets in various sizes as well.

How will this event be handled as a result of COVID?

  • A table will be present in the Rec Center lobby to check people in.
  • Equipment will be disinfected and cleaned after each session.

There will be informational tables you can stop by to learn more about our hockey program. I look forward to meeting each of you at the rink!

Thanks!
